Highlights from 2018:

There and Home Again

More Stories of the Sun Cafe

TICKETS NOW!

This production reprises several stories first developed in our full-length 2015 production STORIES OF THE SUN CAFE. THERE AND HOME AGAIN adds several all-new episodes focusing on the San Diego Japanese American lives turned upside down by their political incarceration during WWII. The broad politics of this dark episode remain painful and controversial. Less familiar are the practical considerations of San Diegans returning home from their political imprisonment. These are the personal stories of the children and families, returning to the neighborhoods and schools they never chose to leave. Teachers will have access to a wealth of background materials developed by both local and regional resources. Sponsored in part by the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program and Arts for Learning.

Stories of the Sun Cafe on DVD

This remarkable 2015 performance is captured here, a timeless remembrance of San Diego in the last century.  From its origin as the Obayashi shooting gallery to the downtown institution it became under the Jeong family, the Sun Cafe watched generations of Japanese American and Chinese American families take their place in San Diego.

Ram-Girl

For early spring of 2015, Asian Story Theater and Moxie Theatre co-presented the world premiere of RAM-GIRL. Family matinees were March 7, at Noon and 2pm at the Moxie Theatre, 6663 El Cajon Blvd. Special preview excerpts were presented at the Chinese New Year and Tet New Year celebrations. RAM-GIRL begins with the Chinese story/parable about a sheep, a monkey, and a rooster who are competing with each other to win a race. However, RAM-GIRL is also about a girl discovering her own identity through some unusual talents.  It's a fun family show, with sly insights into gender identity and prejudice.  The traditional Chinese symbol associated with this year of the lunar calendar is the same for sheep AND goat, and RAM-GIRL explores that literal and metaphorical uncertainty.  And because the Year of the Ram (or Goat) is traditionally associated with individuals of unusual creativity, the performance incorporates visual art and a little music created live on stage.
